Biography
I am Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business and Enterprise and Director of the Centre for India and Global Business at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. Prior to this position, I was Professor of Marketing (2004-2008) and Director of Research (2007-2008) at the Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London; University Senior Lecturer in Marketing, the Judge Institute of Management, University of Cambridge (1999-2004); Assistant Professor and Fellow at the Center for Economic Research, Tilburg University, the Netherlands (1996-1999); and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Anderson School of Management, UCLA (1995-1996). I have a BTech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, and a PhD from the University of Southern California.
My research interests are in marketing, innovation, strategy and international business. In particular, I study various cross-national issues concerning the antecedents and consequences of radical innovation in high-technology contexts such as e-commerce, banking, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. My most recent research is on the role of firm culture in driving innovation in firms across nations. This research also examines how multinational firms organize their innovation activities worldwide, the forces that drive their R&D location decisions and the factors that influence the performance implications of these decisions.
I am on the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Journal of Management Studies, and am on the senior advisory board of the European Journal of Marketing. My work has been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making and Industrial Marketing Management among others. I have consulted for the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry for whom I co-wrote a white paper on innovation, and have taught and consulted with executives from ABN Amro, Bertelsmann AG, British Telecom, EDS, Egg, ING Bank, Nokia, Oce Copiers, Philips, Roche, Shell, Vodafone and Xerox among other companies, in Colombia, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, UK and US. I have recently been awarded a mid-career fellowship from the UK鈥檚 Advanced Institute for Management Research (AIM) to work on a large project on the innovation activities in India and China of the world鈥檚 largest multinationals. My work has been profiled in BusinessWeek, MIT Sloan Management Review, The Times, The Financial Times, The Economic Times and Exec Digital among other publications in India, the UK, US and elsewhere.
